But not milk chocolate, dammit

Chocolate Does a Man's Heart Good
02.27.06, 12:00 AM ET

MONDAY, Feb. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Chocolate lovers, take heart: Dutch research suggests that eating or drinking cocoa appears to lower blood pressure and even reduce the death risks for older men.

Since the 1700s, cocoa has been associated with healthy hearts, but only recently has scientific evidence backed up these claims, according to a new report in the Feb. 27 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

According to the study, cocoa contains flavan-3-ols, which have been linked to lower blood pressure and improved function of the cells lining the blood vessels.

In their study, researchers led by Brian Buijsse, of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, in Bilthoven, examined links between cocoa and cardiovascular health in 470 men aged 65 to 84 years. The men had physical examinations and were interviewed about their diet at the start of the study in 1985 and then again in 1990 and 1995.

The researchers found that over a 15-year period, men who ate cocoa -- including chocolate -- regularly had significantly lower blood pressure compared with those who didn't.

Sound optional, but kinda interesting.

I usually don't like "feel-good" stories, but this is good

Cool stuff

Firstly, I appreciate your patience with the fact that I have not been as active here as I would have liked. What can I say., it's a full life, but I will try to be better in the future.
Now to that cool stuff referenced above:

watch this and be amazed

I could describe it, but too much would get lost in the translation. One of those
"you'll have to trust me" things.

What I want to know

is why so many of the anti-abortion are in favor of the death penalty.
And, to quote Harold Bloom, way are Catholics against the death penalty. They wouldn't have a religion without it.

Housekeeping

Some of you have complained, and rightly so, I might add, that in order to post a comment, you first had to register, a pain in the ass, I would think. Well, all is well. A few simple clicks at the appropriate page and now anyone can post without registering. As this blog is new and still in its formative stage, I welcome any feedback you would like to give to let me make it more relevent, interesting, useful, whatever. More pictures will be forthcoming, as soon as I can figure out how to do that part easily.

at last! the cartoons themselves.

http://www.humaneventsonline.com/sarticle.php?id=12146

Obviously, Muslims object to any depiction of whatshisname. And whatever happened to the biblical commandment about not having graven images. Oh well, I think this is quite enough on this subject. I promise to move on.

wonderful, useful site

Do not go see this movie

In the interest of saving you time and money, avoid Cache, a predictably pretentious French movie, that is boring to boot. Any culture that views Jerry Lewis as a genius is suspect at best, and this movie just confirms that they are on a different planet, taste-wise. I'll hand it to them for old Citroens and great croissants, and Paris, but when it comes to movies, fuggedaboutit.

some thoughts on the cartoons

Before one writes off the Muslims for getting so upset about the whole Mohamad thing, it is interesting, is it not, that the Americans most likely to write the whole thing off as "those crazy Muslims: are the same Americans that get apoplectic at the "desecration" of the American flag. There all just symbols, folks, they ain't the real thing, so let's everybody take a deep breath and relax.

Some thoughts on the Danish cartoons

While, in general, I understand the anger of the Muslims over what they see as a desecration, I don't understand why they are angry at the Danish government, which had nothing to do with anything. The cartoons were published in a privately owned newspaper.
And one more thing: don't those people have anything better to do than riot over every little thing that bothers them. I mean, meditate or something. It's like rioting is the national pastime. And why are the rioters always men. Don't they have any crazy women over there.

A very funny site

A wonderful list of the 50 most loathesome people of 2005. Giraldo Rivera was 50, Bush was 3, Cheney 2, just to give you a flavor. Also, for each a suitable perfect punishment. But they inexplicably excluded Barbra Streisand.

A friend's cool site

A friend of mine, a woman named Piper, is a wonderful, albeit wacky, artist and she has a cool site of her stuff. You might enjoy checking it out.

This is a picture of Alexander at Christmas. I include it just 'cause it's a pretty classic Chrismas picture.

The best bumper sticker

It came to me sometime: Free God from religion. it is my new mantra. Spread the word. It can only do good.
